Dr Mark Hile

Hand and wrist specialist
BE (Mech Eng) (UTS), MBBS (Univ. of Sydney), FRACS, FAOrthA

After completing a degree in Mechanical Engineering in 1984 with first class honours, Dr Hile undertook the combined medicine and surgery degree at The University of Sydney. His internship, resident medical officer posting and basic surgical training was at Royal Prince Alfred Hospital. Advanced training in Orthopaedic Surgery was with the Australian Orthopaedic Association Sydney Northside training scheme, completed in 2000. During 2001 Dr Hile was the Lincoln Centre Fellow at Royal North Shore Hospital Hand Surgery Department with Professor Michael Tonkin, and an Honorary Research Fellow at The Children’s Hospital at Westmead with Professor David Little.

Dr Hile has researched and published articles on fracture healing and tendon repair. He is a director of the Peninsula Orthopaedics Research Institute.

Dr Hile is a specialist Hand and Wrist Surgeon with expertise in microsurgery, peripheral nerve surgery, arthroscopic procedures of the wrist, and all bone and soft tissue problems involving the hand, wrist and upper extremity. They include joint replacement and other procedures for arthritis, treatment of fractures, and tendon and ligament injuries.

Common procedures include carpal tunnel release (open and endoscopic/ keyhole), trigger finger release, Dupuytrens contracture surgery, joint replacement, wrist arthroscopy, ganglion excision, treatment of sports injuries including skiers thumb, fixation of distal radius/ Colles fractures, and microsurgical repair of nerve and artery lacerations.

Dr Hile serves the needs of the lower North Shore and Northern Beaches communities by being on the staff of the Royal North Shore and Mona Vale Hospitals, taking part in the Emergency and Trauma on call rosters at both hospitals.

Dr Hile is married with three growing children. He is often on the sporting sidelines or poolside on weekends providing enthusiastic support. He enjoys a hit of tennis, or paddling an Epic V10 sport ski on Middle Harbour. When possible he also undertakes relatively controlled mountain descents while skiing.

Dr Hile has offices at Dee Why, North Sydney (The Mater Clinic), and St Leonards (North Shore Private).

Dr Sam Chia

Dr Chia is a fellowship trained orthopaedic surgeon with a particular interest in reconstructive surgery of the hip and knee.

Dr Chia completed his medical degree at the University Of Sydney in 1999 and was awarded the Sidney B Clipsham Memorial Prize in Operative Surgery. He completed his residency at The Prince Of Wales Hospital and was then selected onto the Sydney Southside Training Scheme of the Australian Orthopaedic Association. He gained his fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons (FRACS) in 2008 and then completed three postgraduate fellowships in hip and knee reconstruction. These were administered by Arthritis Australia, Royal Prince Alfred Hospital and Peninsula Orthopaedic Research Institute (PORI). Dr Chia is committed to maintaining his knowledge at the highest levels and is certified to perform robotic hip and knee surgery.

Dr Chia also has a keen interest in research, with multiple publications in major orthopaedic journals and is a current director of PORI. He also enjoys participating in medical education and has an appointment as a Clinical Lecturer at the University of Sydney. Dr Chia is also the intern supervisor at Mona Vale Hospital and is heavily involved in registrar teaching at various levels.

Dr Chia is able to provide a service to all residents of the Northern Beaches through participation in the on-call roster and elective lists at Mona Vale Hospital as well as appointments to various private hospitals in the area.

In his spare time, Dr Chia can be spotted pursuing his young family around local parks and beaches. Once a keen cricketer and rugby player, he now enjoys being an armchair critic of most team sports and is often seen to look longingly at the travel section of the Sydney Morning Herald.

Dr Julian Yu

Dr Julian Yu is an Australian Trained Board Certified Specialist Orthopaedic Surgeon practicing in the Northern Beaches, Lower North Shore and CBD of Sydney.

He has a particular expertise in managing conditions of the hip & knee including offering his patients the latest technological advances in Robotic Hip and Knee Replacement Surgery.

Dr Yu’s practice has a focus on robotic joint replacements of the hip and knee as well as sport knee injuries, including ligament reconstructions and arthroscopic surgery. He is further highly proficient in general trauma (Fracture) surgery affecting all extremities.

As a young and modern surgeon, Dr Yu employs the latest technological advances and contemporary surgical techniques, to provide the best up-to-date management options for his patients.

Having completed his medical degree at the University of Newcastle, Dr Yu completed his specialist orthopaedic training in Sydney. He obtained his specialist qualifications through the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons (RACS) and Australian Orthopaedic Association (AOA), graduating as one of the youngest in his year. Further sub-specialised fellowship training was undertaken for 2 years, locally in Sydney and internationally in the UK and France, which allowed Dr Yu to obtain a global perspective and expanded skill-set.

Dr Yu welcomes both private and public patients and services the Northern Beaches trauma service with on call duties at the new Northern Beaches Hospital.

For privately insured patients, Dr Yu is able to manage your needs efficiently at either the Mater Private Hospital (North Sydney) or Northern Beaches Hospital (Frenchs Forest).

On a personal note, he lives in his area of practice with his wonderful wife, being a specialist orthopaedic nurse, and his young children.

Dr Yu is bi-lingual with a strong command of the Chinese (Mandarin) Language.
